This was my first completed environment in Unreal Engine 5 created during a weeklong summer class at Gnomon in Northern Hollywood. This project’s goal was to learn the basics of UE5 and environment creation using premade assets. It was really interesting to learn how to compose everything together in a way that is appealing to the eye as well as being functional.

When I first found the asset of the run down train car, I knew that it had a story behind it that I wanted to tell using the environment around it. Working with the abandoned look of the train car, I added overgrown foliage both on the insides and around the train itself. Under the railroad tracks, I wanted to add puddles of water to add to the effect that it was unkept and had been there for a long time. Later on, I made the water darker and more murky to make it seem like the train car had spilled oil into it. Brick archways are seen in the sides of the hill, showing that there was human development at one time, but is now covered with dirt and moss. While this place is run down, it is thriving with life because it has been left untouched by humanity.

During this process, I learned lots of different features of UE5 including how to alter the landscape, use the paint tool to blend two materials together, how to create water, adding assets and foliage, and utilize composition to create an interesting scene.
